Program

Dear Coaches,
Cross country skiing has experienced enormous worldwide growth in the
amount of competition at the junior through professional levels. This
growth in the nature of the sport has coincided with the systematic application
of a scientific approach to find the most effective and most efficient
training methods for maximizing an athlete’s potential.
This is most evident in coaches education. All indications show that this
growth in coaching education will continue, thus guaranteeing that the
process of coaching skiers will require an increasingly higher level of
coaching knowledge.
By implementing a Coach’s Certification program, CXC and all Central
Coaches will take a major step in the field of coaches education. Certification
will help ensure that American coaches can provide athletes with the best
coaching in the world.
For the first step, CXC will establish in the spring 2007 a Coaches Education
Department and the position of Coaches Education Director. The purpose
of the department is to gather, develop, and disseminate the latest information
in
coaches education for all coaches in the Region and the United States.
This effort will include the creation of educational materials (such as
the CXC Coach’s newsletter, Coaches Education section on www.cxcskiing.com
website and instructional DVD’s, videos and books) as well as having
the department conduct seminars and workshops. Seminars and workshops
will be distributed throughout the Central region.
The programming of the Education department will not be developed in a
vacuum. The department will work closely with the USSA and USOC Sport
Science and Education Departments, and top coaches and cross country ski
leaders around the country, in an effort to provide the best coaches educational
material in the world.
For the second step, CXC will initiate the CXC Coach’s Certification
Program, which will be the flagship of the department’s educational
effort. The program will be directed specifically for the coach at all
age and ability levels working with athletes who are striving for excellence
in cross country skiing. Upon completion of the curriculum, CXC Skiing
will certify participating coaches and recognize their achievements.
Professional coaching is exciting and dynamic. There is no major sport
in the world that trains its athletes the same as it did 10 years ago.
Cross country skiing is no exception. We have a challenge and an obligation
to provide athletes
with the highest quality information and training techniques with an emphasis
on safety. Our goal is that all coaches in the Region and throughout the
United States will support and contribute to the success of this ongoing
effort.
