Distance training is essential in maintaining aerobic fitness which is the building block for one’s anaerobic fitness. A loss of aerobic fitness will affect competitive results. The goals are to maintain aerobic fitness and focus the attention on enhancing one’s high end anaerobic capacity. Maintenance requires approximately 80% of the training load, so this general rule can be used to maintain distance training.
