CXC Elite Development Coach Gus Kaeding has made a smooth transition from the role of Elite Athlete to coach. The former NMU athlete best known for his 2009 Classic Birkie win over legend Bjorn Daehlie only has room to grow in his new role, and is excited to lead CXC Team at Sun Valley for what will be his first time at the reigns.

CXC: With the end of the season knocking on the door, and precious points to be had, what is the team's mentality going into this final race?

GK: Points are not the primary focus here. The emphasis is on staying loose and doing what is needed to end the season on a high note. Some athletes are coming here straight from some high level international races, others are coming from the domestic ranks and haven’t raced much in the past month due to race cancelations. Everyone’s focus is on winning a national title and doing what they need to do individually to make that goal a reality.

CXC: Do you as a coach, have any big expectations for any of the CXC skiers, and any predictions about other racers in the field?

GK: I always have big expectations, not only for the athletes but for myself and the coaches. We are here to win and certainly have the athletes to make that goal attainable.

CXC: Its been tagged as one of the premier races in North America, what makes Sun Valley special, and why is it a great location for the CXC Team to wrap up the 2010/2011 season?

GK: Sun Valley is special because of its ski history. It is a ski town and the locals literally eat, sleep, and breathe skiing. People are very excited for these races. It is the perfect place to wrap up the season because it is a beautiful location with very challenging courses and even more difficult competition.  The best of North America plus a deep international field will be in attendance. I can’t wait to go up against the best!
