Children’s Cross Country Ski & Biathlon Program

WHEN: 10:00AM to 12:00PM, Saturday, October 8, 2011
WHERE: Main Lobby, American Family Children’s Hospital, Madison, WI
WHO: Open to children with lower and upper extremity deficiency, children with physical disabilities (spina bifida, congenital/birth
deficiencies, s/p amputation), visual impaired children, parents, pediatricians and prospective interested volunteers.

ABOUT CHILDREN’S ADAPTIVE PROGRAM: Participants will have the opportunity to learn about cross country skiing and biathlon
through an interactive and exciting presentation that involves introduction from U.S. PARALYMPIC TEAM member Sean Halsted.
Participants will play games on Ski Erg (aerobic exercise equipment that simulates cross country ski motion) and ski the obstacle course on
a sit-ski with mountain board (a fully adjustable ski chair mounted on a special device with wheels which is used for off-snow recreational
skiing, training and racing). American Family Children’s Hospital will provide helmets and free lunches to all participating children.
10 week program will be held on Saturday mornings during winter months at Elver Park culminating in participation in the Madison Winter
Festival and/or American Birkebeiner (Cable-Hayward, WI) in February.

ABOUT SEAN HALSTED: 2010 U.S. Paralympic Team member and U.S. Air Force veteran Sean Halsted was injured after falling 40 feet
out of a helicopter, while on a fast rope during a search and rescue training exercise in 1998. After a breakthrough at the 2007 National
Championships, Halsted found a home on the World Cup circuit in 2008 when he finished 16th in the overall standings in only his first full
year on the team. He also enjoys sled hockey, hand-cycling, swimming and downhill skiing. In high school he lettered in track and cross
country and in college was an all Pac-10 athlete in rowing.

ABOUT ADAPTIVE CROSS COUNTRY SKIING & BIATHLON: Adaptive Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon are available for
individuals with physical disabilities and blindness/visual impairment. Depending on functional disability, a participant uses a sit-ski, a chair
equipped with a pair of skis or a chair equipped with a mountain board for dry-land use. Individuals with blindness/visual impairment
participate in the event with a sighted guide. Adaptive biathlon includes cross country skiing and shooting. The most important success
factor lies in the capability of alternating the cross country ski skills and shooting accuracy during the competition. Participants with
blindness/visual impairment are assisted by acoustic signals, which depending on signal intensity, indicate when the participant is on target.
